Problem

01 〰️ Empathize

Understanding the problem

I developed an understanding of the target user’s goals, needs, frustrations, feelings and thoughts on forming meet-up groups from a social networking app. Also, gathered research to understand the design problem.

Problem

It can be difficult to find friends to go to a live music event (concert, festival, etc.) with especially if you’ve moved cities or your friends don’t have the same music tastes. You might really want to check out a music scene in your city, but your current friends aren’t interested. This app will connect you to new friends who will attend live music events too.

Goal

My live music friendship networking app will let users attend a live music event with new friends which will affect those who don’t have anyone to attend live music events with by matching them with a group of new friends who share the same music interests. I will measure effectiveness by tracking the number of tickets each user buys.

This app features are similar to a dating app’s swiping feature + concert booking service apps + social networking like meetup/facebook.

Challenge

How might we create an app that’ll help people make new friends to attend live music events with?

02 〰️ User Research

Qualitative data to inform design decisions

I interviewed 5 participants to gather qualitative data on their key motivations, pain points, and goals for using a social networking app to meet people who like the same kind of music. Also researched design patterns for social networking flows and created competitive audits. My research spans across user research and market research.

Research Background

Users want the easiest possible way to rent a car for their travels while also saving the planet. Vehicles contribute to the biggest causes of global warming and air pollution. Users want to learn more about the environmental impact of the cars as well. I conducted interviews and empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research were adults with licenses who love to travel and being conscious about the planet. This user group agreed with the assumptions I originally had about the app. Research shows that users want the least amount of steps possible to finish the booking process.

Research Goals

I want to design a convenient way for eco-friendly drivers to rent cars when they travel that are safer for the planet. These research results will affect my design decisions because my users will have the most seamless and educational experience when booking their rentals. Users have a tailored selection of sustainable cars that are suitable for the environment they’re in.

Study Details

Research Questions

  1. Can users easily find groups to attend music events with?

  2. Do music fans have a use for this app?

  3. Can users easily sign up for concerts

  4. Is the messaging platform safe and inclusive?

  5. Do users prefer a swipe feature or a list feature to match with fans with similar music interests?

  6. How should we curate concerts and festivals tailored for the user? (Pull data from Spotify, Apple Music, etc.)

Participants

  • 5 participants

  • Participants of all genders, ages 21-35, and based in NYC

  • Testing these genres: electronic, R&B, hip hop, pop, and country

  • Our participants will also include people who need assistive technologies, visual impairment, auditory impairment, and isn’t fluent in English.

Methodology

  • 25-30 minutes

  • NYC, Remote

  • Unmoderated usability study

  • Users were asked to create a profile, find a group to join and book a live music event ticket.

03 〰️ Analyze

Analyze user insights and research

I defined new design goals and main features based on research and data from interviews and competitive analyses. Then, I created a user persona to define the target audience.

Persona

User Map

This is a journey map for people to use this app. Straightforward experience for those who want to instantly make new connections with people of the same music tastes and to book concerts with your new friends.

04 & 05 〰️ Design and Test

Build wireframes, mockups and prototypes

The design and testing phase is an iterative process. First, I created a design system with scalable and flexible features to ensure visual consistency. I built wireframes then tested them with 5 participants. After usability testing, I created new designs based on pain points and observations from participants. Then, I built the prototype and mockup of the app.

Design System

This is the design system that drives the look and feel of the website. The important parts of the design system are the brand identity and components.

Low-fidelity Prototype

I created low-fidelity wireframes in two phases: pre-test wireframe and post-test wireframe. After I got feedback for my pre-test wireframe, I iterated the post-test wireframe to adjust to the user’s needs.

Pre-Test Low-fidelity Prototype

These wireframes were designed before usability testing. They were quickly designed after sketching concepts for the app.

Post-Test Low-fidelity Prototype
(2nd Iteration)

These wireframes were designed after usability testing and are part of the second iteration of wireframes. After the initial design, users who tested the app said they wanted personalized quizzes to make their feeds more custom. They also said they wanted the app to feel more like a social networking community. Also designed a profile page similar to a social media profile page. Then, I realized that this app would help build community if i made it into more of a social networking app.

Pain Points

After designing the low-fidelity prototype, users tested the app to see where they ran into issues with the features of the app.

Not enough personalization

Users would like a more personalized feed of live music events. A personalized quiz will make their feed more custom to their music tastes.

Concert booking and user legitimacy

Add security to everyone’s profiles by using a verification system.

Could not find messenger tool to chat

Make the messenger buttons more prominent and design a better user flow to lead to the messaging tool.

Could not view user profiles

Users would like more information on the people they’re attending the live music event with.

Affinity Chart

During the testing phase, I monitored my participants to gather findings that’ll be helpful to design the final mockup design.

Usability Study: Findings

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Each round was helpful in building the wireframe and prototype. Findings range from design aesthetic to functionality.

Round 1 Findings

  1. Users want more customization to curated live music feed

  2. Users could not find messenger tool

  3. Users wanted more information on the events

Round 2 Findings

  1. Users wanted verification system for security purposes

  2. Users wanted more social features

  3. Users want easy event booking

Themes

There is no verification system or legitimacy feature

  • 3 out of 5 total participants said they wanted a verification system so that they know that users are legit

Are people's identities verified before matching?".”
— 20 year old participant

Participants want more personalization for live music choices

  • 2 out of 5 total participants said they wanted more personalization, like a music quiz when they create their profiles

It would be cool to have a design quiz to make the options even more personalized.”
— 23 year old participant

Participants could not find messenger tool

  • 2 out of 5 total participants said they could not find messenger chat button after booking their tickets.

It’s difficult to find the messenger tool. Right after I book, I would like to chat with my group right away. It’s a great idea to communicate with your new friends”

— 26 year old participant

Research Insights

Verification system

Users want their identities protected and want to make sure the people they’re meeting are safe and legit.

Customized feeds

Users want a customized quiz especially if they don’t have a Spotify or Apple Music account to sync.

Easy-to-use chat tool

Users want a seamless experience to chat with their new live music friends.

Events Page

Your custom feed of live music events. The events feed page started out as a singular events page. After usability study, I combined the events and profile pages.

Concert Details

The initial design didn’t have event details for users to learn more about the event. I added a pop up overlay that has more details about the event.

Wireframe to Mockup

Create an account and take
personalized quiz

Creating your account is the first step to take for the app. Since this app is a social networking platform, users complete a personalized quiz so that their live music options are tailored to their tastes.

High-fidelity Prototype

Your customized feed

Creating your account is the first step to take for the app. Since this app is a social networking platform, users complete a personalized quiz so that their live music options are tailored to their tastes.

Match with new friends

This feature allows you to meet new people by viewing profiles and matching with potential friends that match your music interests. Your options are curated based on your location, age preferences, and music tastes. This is great for those who want to make new friends with people who like the same music as them. Once you connect with your new friend, you can instantly message them to meet up for a potential concert.

Join a group to attend a concert with!

Once you connect with your new friend, you can instantly message them to meet up for a potential concert. You can also see groups you joined if you prefer attending concerts in groups.

Have detailed information about your live music event
